Looking for a beautiful, culturally rich getaway without the hassle of international travel? Puerto Rico is a vibrant island destination perfect for Black travelers especially those planning a relaxing babymoon. I recently spent mine there, and it was everything I hoped for and more. From the warm hospitality to the stunning landscapes and rich Afro-Caribbean heritage, Puerto Rico felt like a true home away from home.
Why Puerto Rico Is a Great Choice
Puerto Rico offers the best of both worlds a tropical island experience with the convenience of staying within U.S. territory. That means no passport required, and the currency, phone plans, and language (largely English and Spanish) are all accessible. Flights are typically short and affordable, and once you arrive, moderate pricing makes it a great destination for budget-conscious travelers.

What I Packed (And What You Should Too)
Puerto Rico in the warmer months can be hot and humid during the day, especially when you’re out walking around Old San Juan or waiting for excursions. One thing I was so glad I packed? A portable fan. It was a lifesaver during those blazing afternoons especially while pregnant!
Another must-have was my insect repellent band. While mosquitoes werenโt overwhelming, it was comforting to have the extra layer of protection especially at night or near the water.
And for those queasy moments that can pop up on a babymoon, I kept a ginger essential oilโsoaked cotton ball in a Ziploc bag. Just a quick inhale helped ease the nausea when riding in taxis or walking around in the heat.
The good news is that the evenings were breezy and warm, making for perfect dinners by the water and nighttime strolls. Just bring a light wrap or maxi dress, and youโll be good to go.
Where We Stayed: Hilton Condado
Our home base was the Hilton Condado, a sleek beachfront hotel perfect for relaxation. The ocean view from our room was stunning, and the infinity pool offered the perfect vibe for lounging with a mocktail in hand. The hotel staff was friendly and accommodating, and the location made it easy to explore nearby attractions without needing a car.
One unexpected highlight? The casino inside the hotel. Even though I wasnโt drinking or staying out late (babymoon life!), I still had a great time soaking in the atmosphere. I played a few low-stakes games for fun, and my husband really enjoyed the laid-back energy and live music near the slots. It was a nice surprise to have some grown-up fun without leaving the hotel grounds.
Hidden Gems: Below Zero & Anitaโs Gelato
While exploring San Juan, we made sure to visit some local small businesses. One standout was Below Zero, a vibrant dessert spot with creative flavors and a welcoming vibe. We also loved Anitaโs Gelato, which served up delicious scoops perfect for cooling down in the Caribbean heat.

Must-See: Umbrella Street & Old San Juan
One of the most Instagrammable spots in Puerto Rico is Umbrella Street in Old San Juan. Colorful canopies stretch overhead as you walk through the cobblestone streets making for the perfect photo-op. Beyond aesthetics, Old San Juan is full of rich history, from 16th-century Spanish forts to museums that showcase the islandโs African, Taino, and Spanish influences.

Plan Ahead: Excursions & Snorkeling
If you’re thinking about snorkeling, sailing, or other excursions, be sure to plan ahead. While we had our hearts set on a catamaran tour, choppy water caused it to be canceled for safety reasons. Many tour operators will refund or reschedule, but itโs best to book early in your trip in case of changes. Check the weather and sea conditions before you go!
Waxing on Vacation?
If you are a last minute girlie like me when it comes to your beauty regimen before a vacation, don’t be afraid to venture out and get serviced while on vacation. Yes, I even got a Brazilian wax during my trip! The experience was professional, clean, and surprisingly affordable. That wax left my hind parts beautifully bald like Cynthia Erivo’s head. My esthetician was amazing, ESPECIALLY considering I was a walk-in that selected a random professional to do my service. It’s a reminder that Puerto Rico isnโt just for sightseeing itโs also a great spot for self-care and pampering.
Final Thoughts: Puerto Rico Checks All the Boxes
From relaxing at Hilton Condado, indulging in local Black-owned treats, to walking the vibrant streets of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico gave us the babymoon of our dreams. Whether you’re looking for cultural exploration, natural beauty, or just a quick getaway that feels far away, this island delivers.
