Antigua, Guatemala, is a city that blends rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture, making it a must-visit destination for Black travelers. Whether you’re looking for Instagram-worthy spots, thrilling adventures, or foodie experiences, Antigua has something for you. Hereโs your ultimate guide to making the most of your trip!
Getting There: The Guatemala City Hack
Before heading to Antigua, stop in Guatemala City to grab snacks, wine, and essentials. The traffic to Antigua is notoriously terrible, so fueling up beforehand will save you from frustration once you’re on the road.

Where to Eat in
Start your trip with dinner at Mr. Taco Mexican Food. Their tacos are fresh, flavorful, and perfect for a quick bite before making the hour-long drive to Antigua.
Where to Stay in Antigua
For a stylish and cozy stay, I recommend House Casa Catarina. This boutique residence is centrally located, offering easy access to Antiguaโs top attractions while providing a peaceful retreat after a long day of exploring.

Exploring Antigua: Hits & Misses
Hobbitenango โ Is It Worth It?
Hobbitenango is a hobbit-themed eco-park that looks fun in photos, but honestly, itโs overrated. Unless you’re traveling with kids, there’s not much to do. Plus, the photo ops werenโt as aesthetically pleasing as I expected.
Altamira โ A Must-Visit Spot
Altamira, on the other hand, is a hidden gem! With stunning panoramic views, creative sculptures, and plenty of picture-perfect moments, itโs absolutely worth visiting.

La Tortilla Cooking School
If you love immersive experiences, this was my favorite part of the trip! At La Tortilla Cooking School, I got hands-on experience making traditional Guatemalan dishes while enjoying unlimited wine. The best part? Meeting fellow travelers and bonding over amazing food.
Antiguaโs Nightlife: Where to Drink & Party
Aqua Antigua โ A Chill Lounge Spot
Aqua Antigua is a great spot for a relaxed evening with drinks before heading to a livelier location.
El Barrio โ The Ultimate Bar-Hopping Experience
If you’re in the mood for a more lively scene, El Barrio is the place to go. It’s a collection of bars, so you can hop between different vibes in one spot.
Day Trip: Climbing Pacaya Volcano
Pizza Volcano Hike โ A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure

If you love outdoor activities, this hike is a must! However, be warnedโit’s intense. If youโre not used to hiking, I highly recommend taking the horse option to get up the volcano. The highlight? Cooking pizza over hot lavaโwas a bit of a let down to be honest. If youโre not into hiking or outdoors I would not suggest this activity at all!
Dinner at Uuuh Mami โ The Perfect Ending to Your Trip
Uuuh Mami is the ideal final dinner spot before heading home. The food is creative, flavorful, and worth every bite!
Final Thoughts: Should Black Travelers Visit Antigua, Guatemala?
Absolutely! Antigua offers a blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation thatโs perfect for solo travelers, couples, or groups. Just be sure to plan ahead for traffic, choose the right activities, and immerse yourself in the local experience.
